-Final Reflection-If you asked me two weeks ago if that class helped me as a writer I would say no, but now I would say absolutely. When writing my blog posts I never wanted to try the different methods because I did not understand them. In my annotated bib, I knew I had to break through my fear and actually work with them. With this I really did learn more about The Shining and Doctor Sleep.I re-read some of the assigned reading and focused more on what each method and form actually meant and how to apply it.
I wanted to focus on works by Stephen King, because he is one of the best writers of all time. I love the genre of mystery and thrill and that is what I like to write/read about the most. I think by reading The Shining it opened up something in me as a writer. I learned from his writing that if the person doesn't understand your work at first, it makes it more exciting to them as a reader when they have realizations of what certain things mean. I had these moments of realization a lot when reading The Shining, it did help that I read it and highlighted certain parts as I went a long. So as I read and realized different things I could go back and understand things better. This as a reader is an awesome feeling. Taking a break from writing and reading instead made me appreciate others work more then I did before. Learning the different methods and forms makes me want to re-read some of my favorite books and apply the forms and methods. I want to go back and highlight certain parts of good writing and try to apply them to my own writing. I never realized how much goes into writing. There isn't just a beginning middle and end but much more. There is a theme, what the reader is reading for, controlling values and ideas and much more. It might have took me to the end of the semester to actually understand the class more, but at least I did. I am so glad I did because I believe it will make me a better writer and reader. When Everything clicked for me, it made so much more sense. I wish I could've read more books and understood the methods sooner but I want to continue doing this in my journey in becoming a better writer. -Core Values-Writing Arts students will demonstrate understanding of a variety of genre conventions and exhibit rhetorical adaptability in applying those conventions. It was very hard for me to step into being a different reader then I originally was. I read for enjoyment and to finish the book to find out what happens at the end. It didn't happen easy, but I finally was able to step into becoming a resistant reader. My reading for changed and this ultimately helped me become a better writer. In my annotated bibliography I really tried using the different forms and trying genres.
Writing Arts students will understand theories of writing and reading and be able to apply them to their own writing.I have to be honest, I never knew how much was behind writing until this class. I always thought it was just an idea you had in your head and then you write down the idea into a story. Until learning McKee's theories. The theory I used the most in this class was controlling and opposing values. I didn't realize that when you took any part from the book, and made controlling and opposing value chart, it could apply to the whole book. Now I know that for my writing it will be easier to write a story that will be full of conflict and value if I make the chart.
Writing Arts students will demonstrate the ability to critically read complex and sophisticated texts in a variety of subjects. In the beginning of the class when making my reading proposal I really thought about what I wanted to get from this class. I had previously made a list with all works of old literature, but then after thinking about if those texts would impact me as a writer I changed my mind. Instead of focusing on lots of subjects, I focused on one, which is mystery/thriller. Although the texts I picked may not seem sophisticated for some readers, to me I felt by picking one of the best thriller writers of all time and trying to understand his text was my best choice. It took me the majority of the semester to read The Shining, because I didn't just read the book to finish it (which I normally do) but I highlighted, reread, and worked in the methods. Critically reading a book made me understand the writers technique and the story itself.
